Dennis Helfer and Elaine Helfer were the parents of Helfer at the time she was born. She has German, English and Swedish heritage. She studied at William E. Hay Composite High School in Stettler, Alberta. She lived and worked on the family's farm alongside her three sisters: Trena, Tammy and Tara. At age 17 years old, a scout for models at an agency spotted Helfer as she waited in line to enter the cinema.
